Assassin’s Creed Shadowsplayers will spendthe first few chapters of the prologuecontrolling Yasuke. After that, though, they’ll find the controversial character to be conspicuously absent from proceedings, with Naoe taking center stage for almost the entirety of the game’s first act.
With this in mind, some players will no doubt find themselves wondering when they’ll unlock Yasuke inAssassin’s Creed Shadowsand how to switch characters once they’ve done so. Thankfully, both of these questions are fairly easy to answer without giving away too much information about the main story.
When Do You Unlock Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
After the prologue, the next time players see Yasuke will be in the Temple of the Horseman mission, which comesabout eight or nine hours into the main story. Once they’ve finished Temple of the Horseman, they’llplay as the samuraifor a couple of short missions and will unlock the ability to switch freely between Naoe and Yasukeat the start of the “A New League” chapterthat follows.
How to Switch Characters in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Save for a handful of missions that can only be completed as a certain character, players will be free to switch between Yasuke and Naoe whenever they like. They can do so by navigating to the Inventory screen and then holding either the Square (PlayStation) or X (Xbox) button, or by holding Square or X when they fast travel. There will also be certain points in the story when players are asked to choose whether to play as Naoe or Yasuke.
When Should You Play as Yasuke and When Should You Choose Naoe?
Naoe is better for exploration and stealth, whileYasuke excels at head-on assaults. With this in mind, unless the mission calls for one approach over the other, players should choose the character that best matches their playstyle. That said, if they ever find themselves under-leveled for a particular mission, Yasuke is usually the best bet, particularly once Naoe’s assassination attempts start getting blocked.
If players ever find a Kata master while controlling Naoe, they should switch to Yasuke there and then to avoid having to come back later. The same goes for Naoe’s Kuji-kiri spots.
Do You Have to Play as Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
Yasuke is a great characterwho contrasts wonderfully well with Naoe in various ways. However, those who think differently will be happy to learn thatplayers will rarely be forced to play as Yasuke, with only a handful of backstory and side missions being Yasuke-specific. There are also missions in which the game automatically switches between Naoe and Yasuke at certain points, but these are few and far between and each segment of these missions tends to be quite short.
